Why can't I set different lookback windows per condition at Search Term level?

At Search Term level, all conditions in an automation share a single lookback window. When you change the lookback window for one condition, it applies to every condition in that automation. This is expected behavior for Search Term level automations.

Keep in mind!

The shared lookback window applies to Search Term level automations only. At other levels, such as keywords, ad groups, and campaigns, you can set a different lookback window for each condition.

Why keywords and ad groups behave differently than search terms

If you have set different lookback windows per condition when working with keywords or ad groups, that is correct and expected. The per-condition lookback window is available at those levels.

The Search Term level is the exception: there, the lookback window is shared across all conditions in the automation, which is why you cannot set it individually.

How to compare different lookback windows at Search Term level

If you want to compare a Search Term metric across different time periods, for example spend over the last 3 days versus spend over the last 7 days, create separate automations, one per lookback window.

  1. Create one Search Term automation with the first lookback window, such as the last 3 days, and set its conditions.
  2. Create a second Search Term automation with the second lookback window, such as the last 7 days, and set its conditions.
  3. Run both automations so each evaluates its own time period.

Because each automation carries a single lookback window, splitting the comparison across two automations lets you evaluate the same metric over different periods.
