Read the Free, Paid, and Grossing charts
Top Charts displays three ranking columns side by side for the selected store, category, country, and date. Each column shows a different measure of app performance.
The three chart columns
- Free: Apps ranked by download volume among apps available at no cost.
- Paid: Apps ranked by download volume among apps that require an upfront payment.
- Grossing: Apps ranked by revenue generated through in-app purchases and subscriptions, regardless of whether the app itself is free or paid.
What each app entry shows
Each entry in the chart includes:
- The app’s rank position and any recent movement, indicated by arrows.
- The app icon, name, and developer.
- The app’s average rating and category.
Spot Apple Ads advertisers in the rankings
On the App Store, entries for apps running Apple Ads show an Apple Ads label next to their category. Use this to quickly identify which ranked apps are actively investing in paid search to support their chart position. A high-ranking app with an Apple Ads label is likely combining paid user acquisition with strong organic performance.
What to look for
- Apps that appear in both the Free and Grossing charts are monetizing their download volume.
- New entrants near the top of a chart can signal a recent launch, viral moment, or heavy paid campaign worth investigating.
- A drop in ranking between consecutive dates can indicate a seasonal pullback, a negative review spike, or a competitor pushing up from below.
